The Small Hand: a ghost story by Susan Hill

Find this book at your library

Genre - Horror

Susan Hill is a great English writer that really knows how to create a creepy atmosphere. Its not a blood curdling horror, more like a sad haunting english story that keeps you reading till the end.

Lots of atmosphere, presented in a little bite sized beautiful book.

Hater by David Moody

It’s just another typical day, you are on your way to work when the person walking next to turns and murders an old woman in front of you, out of the blue, for no reason at all, what would you do? What would you think?

This is just the start of David Moody's Hater. An intriguing novel, I found it strangely fascinating even if I was not absorbed by the story, I kept reading because I needed to know why people were committing these seemingly random acts of violence towards strangers as well as loved ones.

With recommendations from the directors of the Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth.I would not be surprised if this is turned into a movie.

I can recommend this novel if you are looking for something different to read.

'Kill or be killed. Hate or be hated.'

To begin this review i will let you know that I am a big fan of Stephen King and that I have read quite alot of his novels/novella and was kind of worried about his more "modern" works, but I was too paranoid as it was a great story. It is definatly not his best novel nor his worst but it was enjoyable non the less. The great thing about "Cell" is that it takes a everyday item and turns it into a problem.. a large problem, somehow a pulse is broadcasted through cellphones and cause's the user to instantly turn rabid and zombielike, but it is worth noting that they are not zombies, they are simply people infected with a disease much like thoese of "I am Legend" Pretty straight foward story line, Husband is interstate, infection takes place, Husband must get back to family. This may sound like another "dawn of the dead" type movie in a book and thats what it basically is, its very gory, realativly short, and easy to read and thats what made it so enjoyable. Overall it was a very fun novel, not very serious or memorable read, has some unique features but i will probably forget about it until the movie is released (quinteen tarentino :O) but for the holidays it was just a fun read.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

This tale is much more than just a vampire story. It has crime, social commentary, school life, parental issues, alcoholism and cats. It’s so refreshing to read an urban fantasy novel that doesn’t have the cliché kick-arse heroine. Instead, we have schoolboy Oskar, bullied relentlessly at school, who has a macabre fascination with murder. Eli, who’s just moved next door, is like no one else Oskar’s encountered before and there’s a good reason for that.

Oskar and Eli are two of the most fascinating characters I’ve come across in a long time. The cat scenes are disturbing - the moral of the story being not to own eighteen cats. The cruelty and violence of the kids is horrifying; forget the innocence you believe children have. An engrossing read that leaves me waiting for the author’s second novel to be translated into English.
